Hilton Head Island: The Crown Jewel of the Southeast Coast

Hilton Head Island is the largest island on the East Coast except for Long Island. It is larger than Manhatten. The Island is on the Intracoastal Waterway and is part of the South Carolina Lowcountry and is close to Savannah, GA, and less than a hundred miles south of Charleston. The highlights of the Island, which make it a popular vacation spot, are its 12 miles of spectacular beachfront along the Atlantic Ocean and its dozens of world-class golf courses. More than two million visitors contribute billions of dollars to the local economy of Hilton Head Island every year.

What makes it the "Crown Jewel", though, is the way in which it was developed. Most of the beach front contains just single family homes. There is only one ten story building, the Marriott. There are no beachfront roads making the beach quite private; the Island is separated into ten huge private gated residential enclaves filled with almost every luxury amenity one could imagine. Outside those enclaves are some of the best restaurants and shopping in South Carolina.

Eco-Friendly Development

At the 2010 census, the year-round population of Hilton Head was 37,099, having experienced a high growth rate of 32 percent over the past decade. The Town of Hilton Head is renowned for its eco-friendly development, and has been incorporated as a municipality. The town also maintains multiple beach access points, including one reserved exclusively for use by the town residents. Strict local laws minimize the impact of development in order to preserve the natural wealth of the area.

Unlike most wind-swept oceanfront islands, Hilton Head is known for its lush tree cover right out to the oceanfront dunes. The most popular and abundant tree on the Island is the live oak known the world over for its knarled branches covered with Spanish moss.

Lots of Fun Events and Things To Do Besides Going to the Beach or Links

Considering the relatively smaller community size, Hilton Head Island offers an unusually high number of cultural opportunities. Some of the finest cultural events here include Broadway-quality plays at the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina, the famed Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra, the 120-member full chorus of the Hilton Head Choral Society, and a number of annual community festivals.

The Island hosts the nationally televised RBC Heritage Golf Classic, a stop on the PGA Tour, which is played in Sea Pines Plantation on the Harbor Town Golf Links. It also hosts the largest outdoor, tented wine tasting event on the East Coast every year and the popular Hilton Head Island Concours d' Elegance Motoring Festival.
