150+ Historic Years of Bluffton, S.C.

The historic Town of Bluffton, known today as “Old Town”, was incorporated in 1852 and covered an area of one square mile, situated on a high bluff overlooking the pristine waters of the May River. The Town was designed to serve as a stopover for travelers visiting Savannah, Charleston, or Beaufort. Its prime feature was a steamboat landing that was built at the end of Calhoun Street to facilitate traveling.

When the War Between the States commenced, Bluffton became a safe haven for people who were fleeing the South Carolina sea islands. The Confederate forces used Bluffton as their headquarters until the General Sherman occupied the town after the capture of Savannah several days before Christmas of 1864. Today fifteen pre-Civil-war homes and two churches and many centuries-old oaks form the heart of the historic charm that is Old Town Bluffton.

Bluffton Enters the 21st Century

Bluffton remained a small town at one square mile (640 acres) from its inception in 1852 to 2000. However, in 2000, Bluffton annexed an area of 32,000 acres to expand its territory, which made it the fifth biggest town in South Carolina in terms of area.

The result of this annexation has been that today Bluffton is a transformed modern town, but with a pristine, wise heart. Living in Bluffton combines the exotic Old Town charm with dazzling new neighborhoods and plenty of entertainment, food, and shopping options. It is also privileged to have one of the most vivacious oceanfront resorts on the East Coast, Hilton Head Island, just a bridge away. Residents of Bluffton, thus, are blessed with the finest of four worlds: historic charm, modern neighborhoods, contemporary conveniences, and oceanfront resort fun.

The peaceful streets of Bluffton are lined with giant oaks covered with Spanish moss. The town is marked by a number of galleries, cafes and antique stores, many of which were originally ancient 19th century homes. These places also serve as meeting points for the town’s regulars who love to greet old pals and extend a warm welcome to new ones with their legendary Southern hospitality. Nature has gifted its bounties generously to Bluffton. As you explore the town while walking down the sidewalks, you can treat your senses to hints of a refreshing breeze and sights of the fabulous May River.
