The shoreline of Port Royal is where Captain William Hilton first landed in 1663. The Island was eventually named for this explorer. At the start of the Civil War, the present Port Royal Plantation was occupied by Confederate forces. They were driven out by invading Yankees who set up both a camp and a town on this site. Historical markers at Fort Walker Park, the Beach House and the Steam Gun describe the many landmark events that took place here and in the surrounding waters.

Amenities include four tennis courts, the oceanfront Beach House, which may be reserved by residents for personal private parties; an Olympic size pool; the Arboretum, where native plants are identified and paths are marked; the beaches, accessible from the Beach House or from any of 19 beach walks; affiliated clubhouse and golf facilities featuring 54 holes; fishing, both fresh and salt water; historical sites; and leisure paths winding throughout the plantation.
